LAHORE: A division bench of the Lahore High C
ourt (LHC) on Wednesday ordered authorities to release a condemned prisoner, Muhammad Imra
n, nine year after conviction under murder charge.
Imran was charged with the murder of his wife.
The bench, comprising Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan and Justice Shehram Sarwar, on Wednesday ordered his release.
A sessions c
ourt awarded death penalty to Muhammad Imran in 2007 for killing his wife, Bushra, allegedly in the name of honour.
Imran challenged h
is conviction before the high court.
Counsel for the appellate Rana Abdul Hameed submitted that the deceased was murdered by dacoits during resistance in a robbery b
id. He said that police instead of arresting the accused converted Bushra’s death into an honour killing case.
He said that the trial c
ourt did not consider the evidence about innocence of Imran, and awarded capital punishment on the basis of weak and
contradictory evidence. He requested the c
ourt to set aside the death sentence and acquit the appellant.
